TILEEVERY ENCLOSUREMM

Excursion

Use this tile to check whether the cone has enough travel for the bass you ask it to play. The curve is peak, one-way displacement from rest, not peak-to-peak travel.
Shows
How far the cone travels from rest, peak and one way, in mm at each frequency, against the driver’s Xmax.
Healthy when
The curve stays under the Xmax line through the band you will play, at the power you will use.
If it is not
A high-pass just below the tuning, less power, or more cone area.

  • 200 W21.2 mm at 10 Hz
Ciare 12.00SW, vented example at 200 W, half space, 1 m. Simulated when this page was built.

The vented example peaks at 21.2 mm near 10 Hz across this plotted range. The driver’s Xmax is 13.5 mm. Open this example and hover for the travel at a particular frequency.

Each visible design has its own curve. Dashed Xmax lines use the drivers’ own limits; Xmech and Xdamage appear when the driver data includes them and excursion warnings are enabled. Multiple-entry horns also show the additional drivers.

Read the dip, then look below it#

Near the 32 Hz tuning, the port supplies much of the sound and cone travel falls. Below tuning the cone unloads, so falling SPL can accompany rising excursion. Judge the band you intend to reproduce, including anything left below the crossover.

Reducing power to a quarter reduces peak travel to 0.50 times the original. A high-pass can instead reduce demand mainly below the useful band; inspect the filtered SPL as well.

What moves it#

ChangeWhat to watch
More power or bass boostMore travel wherever the voltage rises. Filters are included in the curve.
Change box volume or tuningThe dip and peaks move; recheck the complete working band.
Add a high-passLess travel below its corner, with less SPL there too.
Add another driverCompare at the output you need, with wiring and power set correctly.

What to try#

TryWhat it changes
A high-pass below the tuningBelow the tuning a port or passive radiator stops holding the cone back. Right-click the chart, choose Add filter and put a high-pass just under the tuning.
Less powerTravel follows the square root of power: half the power is about 0.7 times the excursion, and 3 dB quieter.
More cone areaA second driver, or a bigger one, moves the same air with less travel each.
