Your first design

Build a vented subwoofer for a real 12-inch driver, read the graphs that matter most, and see what breaks when you turn it up. Every graph here is the simulator’s own output for the same design.

Pick a driver#

Open the simulator. A first visit starts as a guest, so there is nothing to sign up for. The Welcome to 00 Simulator dialog offers ready-made examples; choose Start from scratch and it opens Add enclosure. Later, Add new enclosure at the foot of the enclosure list opens the same dialog.

  • Click the Driver box (it reads Select a driver until you pick one) and type 12.00SW. The search matches manufacturer and model.
  • Results under Catalogue show each driver’s model, brand, nominal impedance and size. The star makes it a favourite, listed under Your drivers next time.
  • Browse all opens Advanced driver search: filters, and a table of size, impedance, Fs, Qts, Vas, Bl, Sd and Xmax for every driver. Create custom driver adds one of your own (Drivers: find, create, import).

Pick the Ciare 12.00SW. These four of its parameters shape this design; T/S parameters in five minutes covers the rest.

Fs
29 Hz: where the cone resonates in free air.
Qts
0.29: how damped that resonance is.
Vas
55 L: the suspension’s stiffness, as a volume of air.
Xmax
13.5 mm: how far the cone travels, one way, before it distorts.

With a driver chosen, the dialog suggests a type from the driver’s EBP (Fs divided by Qes) under Suggested starting point. For this driver it reads: EBP 88 points toward a vented starting alignment at 82.5 L, tuned to 26 Hz. Keep Vented, leave Name and Colour as they are, and click Add enclosure.

Make it vented#

The new enclosure starts from the suggestion. Its settings are in the Enclosure section under the enclosure list, and Type already reads Vented. Set Volume to 55 L and Tuning to 32 Hz, the box from the app’s Vented example. Then open Port and set Diameter to 100 mm, with Number of ports at 1.

Box volume adjustments

  • Port length follows from the tuning and the port’s size: 356 mm here. It works both ways: type a port length and the tuning follows instead. The panel holds whichever you set last.
  • Results, under the port, lists its cross-sectional area and Port volume, the space the port itself takes up inside the box.
  • Prefer to skip the typing? Open the finished example and carry on from the next step.

Read the response#

A new workspace opens with the SPL (dB) tile: level against frequency, one curve per enclosure in its colour. This one is flat to within 1.7 dB from 40 Hz to 200 Hz and falls away below the 32 Hz tuning. Its F3, where it falls 3 dB below its loudest octave, is 30.3 Hz; F10 is 24.9 Hz.

dB

Ciare 12.00SW in the 55 L vented example tuned to 32 Hz, at 200 W, half space, 1 m. Simulated when this page was built. At 1 W the curve has the same shape, 23 dB lower.
  • Click F3 in the tile’s header to mark F3 and F10 on each curve. F-point settings beside it choose which points show and the level they are measured from; the default is Auto · loudest octave average.
  • The level is at 1 m in half space until you change Environment, in the Driver panel. Reading a response covers what the shape tells you.

Turn it up#

Power is set per enclosure. Open Power in the Driver panel and set Input power to 200 W; the numbers under the slider are clickable. The curve rises 23 dB and keeps its shape, to about 110 dB. Two limits break first, on the Excursion and Port Velocity tiles (the example opens with both; otherwise add them with Add tile):

  • Excursion: below about 19 Hz the cone travels past its 13.5 mm Xmax, the dashed line on the tile. Under the tuning the port no longer holds the cone back.
  • Port Velocity: at the tuning the port does the work, and its air peaks at 28.4 m/s near 30 Hz, over the 17 m/s warning line.
Start at 1 WThe vented example: a 55 L box tuned to 32 Hz through one 10 cm port, at 1 W. At this level the cone and the air in the port move nowhere near their limits.

The app’s own SPL, Excursion and Port Velocity tiles running this design in your browser, as the power goes from 1 W to 200 W. Nothing here is saved.

Keep it#

As a guest the design lives in this browser, and the header reads Guest project. To keep it, click Save in the header:

  • Create free account signs you in, and your guest project comes with you as a cloud workspace (an account that already has workspaces asks first: Import guest workspace?). A free account keeps up to 250 workspaces, saved as you go, with their revision history, on any device you sign in on.
  • Download .00sim keeps a file instead, which Export › Open 00sim project… opens again.

Your assistant runs the same solver through the 00 Simulator connector and saves the design to your account.
Using 00 Simulator, build a 55 L vented box tuned to 32 Hz with one 10 cm port for the Ciare 12.00SW, simulate it at 200 W, and tell me its F3 and where excursion and port velocity go over their limits.
