Stubbed horn

A closed side branch, the stub, joins the main horn partway along. The stub cancels a band of frequencies set by its own length, which lets you notch out a resonance without moving the driver.

The default horn path the simulator starts a new horn with, with a 15 L sealed rear chamber and the stub junction at 40 %, with a B&C 10PS26. Closed stub length: 0.45 m. Drawn by the simulator when this page was built.

How it connects

The driver feeds the main horn at its throat, with the back of the cone in the rear chamber.

The stub is a second path that branches from the stub junction and ends closed. It has its own spans, so you set its length and taper like any other path.

When to use it

Good for

  • Front-loaded horns with a single troublesome peak that the stub can be tuned against.
  • Experiments with side-branch damping before committing to a cabinet.

Watch for

  • The stub length sets where the notch falls; the junction position changes how deep it is and how it interacts with the horn’s own peaks.
  • With the rear chamber at 0 L the back of the cone radiates directly, as a Direct radiator output.

What you set

Set the enclosure type to Horn, then choose Stubbed under Horn type, in the enclosure panel or in the Horn Editor’s path bar. These controls then appear in the horn card:

ControlWhat it sets
Stub junction positionA percentage of the main path, measured from the throat.
Main hornThroat diameter, then up to eight spans.
Closed stubJunction diameter, then its spans; its readout shows the Closed end Ø.
Throat chamberVolume and Cross-section.
Rear chamberLoading: Sealed or Port, and Volume. At 0 L the back of the cone radiates directly.

The driver marker is fixed at the throat and the stub junction marker can be dragged. Use the Main and Stub chips in the path bar to switch which path you are editing. How the Horn Editor works.

What the closed stub length does

Only the stub length changes. Each stub puts its notch at a different frequency, lower for the longer stub, while the bass below the notch stays close to the same.

Diagnostics and stuffing

The one horn output is the Main mouth, with the Rear port when the rear chamber is ported and a Direct radiator when it is 0 L. The stub has its own locations, named Main stub. Reading the horn diagnostics.

Folding and Hornresp

Folding
Not yet. Folding handles one horn path, so the Fold into cabinet button is disabled for stubbed horns and the Fold tile says the type does not fold yet.
Hornresp export · SH
Up to three main spans and one stub span export as a native record. A ported rear chamber is written as Rear Vented.
Checked against Hornresp
9 native Hornresp cases of this type are re-simulated in the regression tests. 9 of 9 agreement checks meet their tolerances.

Try it

There is no example for this type yet. Open the simulator, add an enclosure, set its type to Horn and choose Stubbed under Horn type. It starts from the default horn path.

Using 00 Simulator, add a stubbed horn to my open workspace for the driver I am using now. Try closed stub lengths of 30, 45 and 60 cm without saving, simulate each at 50 W and tell me which one best cancels the largest peak above the band.
