# Stubbed horn

> How to model a stubbed horn in 00 Simulator: the stub junction position, the closed stub path, throat and rear chambers, diagnostics and Hornresp export.

A closed side branch, the stub, joins the main horn partway along. The stub cancels a band of frequencies set by its own length, which lets you notch out a resonance without moving the driver.

_Figure: The stubbed horn drawn by the simulator's schematic, with its chambers, paths and outputs._

The default horn path the simulator starts a new horn with, with a 15 L sealed rear chamber and the stub junction at 40 %, with a B&C 10PS26. Closed stub length: 0.45 m. Drawn by the simulator when this page was built.

## How it connects

The driver feeds the main horn at its throat, with the back of the cone in the rear chamber.

The stub is a second path that branches from the stub junction and ends closed. It has its own spans, so you set its length and taper like any other path.

## When to use it

### Good for

- Front-loaded horns with a single troublesome peak that the stub can be tuned against.
- Experiments with side-branch damping before committing to a cabinet.

### Watch for

- The stub length sets where the notch falls; the junction position changes how deep it is and how it interacts with the horn’s own peaks.
- With the rear chamber at 0 L the back of the cone radiates directly, as a Direct radiator output.

## What you set

Set the enclosure type to **Horn**, then choose **Stubbed** under **Horn type**, in the enclosure panel or in the **Horn Editor**’s path bar.

### In the horn card

The horn card in the enclosure panel lists each path as a row: click one to open that path in the **Horn Editor**. The card also sets:

| Control | What it sets |
| --- | --- |
| **Throat chamber** | **Volume**, and its **Cross-section** under **Advanced**. |
| **Rear chamber** | **Loading**: **Sealed** or **Port**, and **Volume**. At 0 L the back of the cone radiates directly. |

### In the Horn Editor

The path itself is set on the **Horn Editor** tile. Drag it in the drawing, or switch the tile to **Table** to type each value:

| Control | What it sets |
| --- | --- |
| **Main horn** | The area at the throat, then up to eight spans. |
| Stub junction marker | Where the stub joins the main horn, in cm from the throat. |
| **Closed stub** | Under the **Stub** chip in the path bar: the area at the junction, then its spans. The table’s **End Ø** is the closed end’s. |

The driver marker is fixed at the throat and the stub junction marker can be dragged. Use the **Main** and **Stub** chips in the path bar to switch which path you are editing. [How the Horn Editor works](https://simulator.00aud.io/docs/horns/editor).

## What the closed stub length does

Only the stub length changes. Each stub puts its notch at a different frequency, lower for the longer stub, while the bass below the notch stays close to the same.

The default horn path the simulator starts a new horn with, with a 15 L sealed rear chamber and the stub junction at 40 %. Only the closed stub length changes between the lines. Simulated when this page was built.

Closed stub length, SPL: B&C 10PS26, Half Space · 1.0 m · 50 W.

| Closed stub length | −3 dB |
| --- | --- |
| 0.3 m | 87 Hz |
| 0.45 m (the design drawn above) | 91 Hz |
| 0.6 m | 88 Hz |

## Diagnostics and stuffing

The one horn output is the Main mouth, with the Rear port when the rear chamber is ported and a Direct radiator when it is 0 L. The stub has its own locations, named Main stub. [Reading the horn diagnostics](https://simulator.00aud.io/docs/horns/diagnostics).

The main horn and the stub can both be stuffed. [How stuffing works](https://simulator.00aud.io/docs/horns/stuffing).

## Folding and Hornresp

- **Folding:** Not yet. Folding handles one horn path, so the **Fold into cabinet** button is disabled for stubbed horns and the **Fold** tile says the type does not fold yet.
- **Hornresp export · SH:** Up to three main spans and one stub span export as a native record. A ported rear chamber is written as Rear Vented.
- **Checked against Hornresp:** 9 native Hornresp cases of this type are re-simulated in the regression tests. 9 of 9 agreement checks meet their tolerances.

## Try it

_Interactive walkthrough in the page: the simulator's own tiles running a short demo._

There is no example for this type yet. Open the simulator, add an enclosure, set its type to **Horn** and choose **Stubbed** under **Horn type**. It starts from the default horn path.
