Paraflex horn

Two resonator paths couple the faces of the diaphragm and join again before one shared mouth. The four subtypes, PH1 to PH4, connect the driver and the auxiliary path at different points, so the same spans can give very different responses.

The default Paraflex main and auxiliary paths, with a B&C 10PS26. Subtype: PH1. Drawn by the simulator when this page was built.

How it connects

The main path has four spans, H1 to H4, and H4 radiates through the mouth. The auxiliary path has three, H5 to H7. H1 and H5 start at closed ends.

PH1 puts the driver between S2 and S7, and H7 rejoins the auxiliary path at S4. PH2 puts the driver between S4 and S7, and H7 rejoins at S2.

PH3 and PH4 couple one face through the adapter H7: to S2 in PH3 and to S7 in PH4. The auxiliary path then rejoins at S4 in PH3 and at S2 in PH4.

When to use it

Good for

  • Deep bass designs where you want to try four connection layouts on the same spans.
  • Comparing subtypes on the same spans in one workspace.

Watch for

  • The main path always has four spans and the auxiliary path three; they cannot be added or removed.
  • There are no chamber controls in a Paraflex horn.

What you set

Set the enclosure type to Horn, then choose Paraflex under Horn type, in the enclosure panel or in the Horn Editor’s path bar. These controls then appear in the horn card:

SubtypePH1, PH2, PH3 or PH4. Also in the Horn Editor’s path bar.
Main hornFour spans, H1 to H4.
Auxiliary path (H5–H7)For PH1 and PH2: three spans.
Auxiliary resonator (H5–H6) and Diaphragm adapter (H7)For PH3 and PH4: two resonator spans, plus the adapter’s Length (cm) and Junction Ø (cm).

The path bar has a subtype select and chips for the main path and the auxiliary path, or the resonator and adapter. There are no draggable markers. How the Horn Editor works.

What the subtype does

The spans are the same for all four lines; only the subtype changes. PH1 and PH3 reach lowest here, PH2 gives up the most bass, and all four differ in where their peaks and notches fall above 100 Hz.

Diagnostics and stuffing

The one output is the Main mouth. Locations cover Main H1 to H4 and Auxiliary H5 to H7. Reading the horn diagnostics.

The main spans, the auxiliary spans and the adapter can all be stuffed. The Hornresp export refuses stuffing on the auxiliary path. How stuffing works.

Folding and Hornresp

Folding
Not yet. Folding handles one horn path, so the Fold into cabinet button is disabled for Paraflex horns and the Fold tile says the type does not fold yet.
Hornresp export · PH1 to PH4
Four main and three auxiliary spans. Hornresp derives S7 from one continuous H5/H6 flare, so the export asks you to match their flare and junction area first. Chambers and auxiliary stuffing are refused.
Checked against Hornresp
13 native Hornresp cases of this type are re-simulated in the regression tests. 13 of 13 agreement checks meet their tolerances.

There is no example for this type yet. Open the simulator, add an enclosure, set its type to Horn and choose Paraflex under Horn type. It starts from the default horn path.

Using 00 Simulator, add a Paraflex horn to my open workspace for the driver I am using now. Simulate it as PH1, PH2, PH3 and PH4 without saving, at 50 W, show me SPL for all four, and tell me which subtype reaches lowest.
