# Horn Radiating Outputs

> Separate a horn’s radiating mouths, ports and exposed cones, and see where their phases make the coherent total add or cancel.

Source: https://simulator.00aud.io/docs/reference/tiles/horn-radiating-outputs

A horn can radiate from more than one place. This tile splits those contributions so you can see whether they support or cancel one another.

- **Shows:** Each radiating mouth, port or exposed cone separately, plus their coherent total.
- **Healthy when:** The outputs combine usefully over the intended band, without an unwanted cancellation notch.
- **If it is not:** Compare their levels and phases, then test the path lengths or driver positions that set their relationship.

## The tile

_Figure: The back-loaded horn’s direct cone and mouth shown separately, with their coherent total._

The outputs are pressures, so they add with their phase: where the dashed lines are close in level and opposite in phase, the total drops below both.

Back-loaded horn: direct cone and mouth. Solid: the total. Dashed: Main mouth and Direct radiator on their own.

This is the back-loaded-horn guide’s design: B&C 10PS26, Half Space · 1.0 m · 50 W. Dashed curves show Main mouth and Direct radiator. The solid curve is their coherent total.

**Magnitude** shows SPL from each radiating output. **Phase** shows their far-field pressure phases and the phase of the summed pressure. There is no station selector because these are the outlets to the room, rather than internal locations.

## Read a cancellation

1. **Find the notch.** Look for a total below strong individual outputs at the same frequency.
2. **Compare phase.** Switch to **Phase**. Outputs with similar levels and opposing phases can nearly cancel. Their decibel readings must not be added as ordinary numbers.
3. **Change the cause.** Preview the path length, driver entry or other geometry that sets their relationship, then recheck the complete useful band. Moving one notch may create another.

| Horn connection | What to look for |
| --- | --- |
| Back-loaded horn | The exposed front cone combining with the rear-loaded horn mouth. |
| Compound horn | The front and rear horn mouths combining. |
| A ported rear chamber | The port contribution combining with the other radiating output. |
| A single-mouth horn | A single outlet can leave little to separate; use internal diagnostics for path behaviour. |

## Keep the model’s limits in view

These outputs are the model’s coherent far-field pressures at its configured distance and radiation conditions. The tile is not a room-interference or directivity prediction. It also omits the dashed folded-horn comparison shown on ordinary frequency graphs.

## What to try

| Try | What it changes |
| --- | --- |
| Find cancellation | Look for the solid total falling below strong individual dashed outputs. |
| Check phase | Switch to **Phase** at a suspected notch; the outputs combine as pressures, not as dB values. |
| [Trace each output](https://simulator.00aud.io/docs/reference/tiles/schematic) | Use **Schematic** to see where each radiating contribution comes from. |

> Using 00 Simulator, inspect the radiating outputs of my horn and find any cancellation inside its intended working band. Compare each output’s level and phase at the notch, then preview a geometry change and report whether the total response improves.
