# Settings and themes

> Every setting in 00 Simulator: light or dark mode, themes and the theme builder, the frequency axis, units, the upper-response model and the warning lines.

Source: https://simulator.00aud.io/docs/guides/settings

Where to change how 00 Simulator looks and what it warns you about. Everything here is under **Settings**, the cog at the right of the header, and none of it changes a design’s box or driver.

## The Settings menu

| Item | What it opens |
| --- | --- |
| **Display…** | Light or dark, the theme, the top of the frequency axis and the unit system. [Display](#display). |
| **Appearance…** | The theme builder, for a theme of your own. [Themes](#themes). |
| **Simulation…** | How the response is worked out above the bass, and the warning lines on the graphs. [Simulation](#simulation). |
| **Drivers…** | The driver library: the **00 Bits library** and the drivers you made or imported. [Drivers: find, create, import](https://simulator.00aud.io/docs/guides/drivers). |
| **Passive radiators…** | The same library for passive radiators. |

> **On a shared design** A shared design’s page has only **Display…** and **Appearance…** in the menu, and its frequency axis stays as it was shared. The rest is for designs in your own workspace.

## Display

| Setting | Choices | What it does |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Mode** | **Light**, **Dark**, **System** | **System** follows your computer or phone. Kept in this browser. |
| **Theme** | Default, Grosso, then any themes you have saved | Switches the app’s greys and lines. **Customise…** closes the dialog and opens the theme builder. [Themes](#themes). |
| **Upper frequency**, under **Axes** | **Auto**, 400 Hz, 1 kHz, 2 kHz, 5 kHz, **Custom** (20 to 20,000 Hz) | The right-hand end of every frequency axis, and the solver works up to it too. **Auto** is 400 Hz, or 2 kHz once the workspace holds a horn. Saved with the workspace. |
| **Unit system** | **Metric** or **Imperial** | Lengths and volumes in millimetres, centimetres and litres, or in inches and cubic feet. Saved with a signed-in workspace, and in this browser as a guest. |

> **Raise it to see the top end** A box speaker’s response above 400 Hz matters when you cross it over high, to a mid or a horn. Set **Upper frequency** to 1 kHz or 2 kHz and every tile, from **SPL (dB)** to **Impedance**, draws that far. Horns get 2 kHz on their own.

## Themes and the theme builder

A theme sets the app’s greys, lines and accent in both light and dark mode; it never changes an enclosure’s own colour. Default and Grosso are built in. As the Display dialog says, Grosso puts more contrast between the sections of the side panels: section headers stand out from the panel as bars, and fields sink to the background colour.

**Appearance…** opens the builder, **Appearance**, as a small palette over the dashboard. It has no backdrop, so the whole app is the preview, and you can drag it by its header to see either side panel. On a phone it is a sheet at the bottom of the screen.

| Part | What it changes |
| --- | --- |
| **Theme** and **Colour mode** | The theme you start from (**Built in** or **Yours**), and whether you are editing its **Dark** or **Light** version. |
| **Separation** | One slider for how strongly the panel sections stand apart: Default at 0, Grosso at 100, up to 160. |
| **Open section** | **Accent rail** draws a line in the section’s colour down an open section’s header; **Function tint** tints the header with it. |
| **Colours** | **Accent**, **Background** and **Text** for the mode you are editing. **Reset** puts one back to the app’s own. |
| **Advanced** | The 15 values behind **Separation** one by one: surfaces, hairlines, text, graph grids and more. Hover a name for what it touches. |
| **Contrast** | Checks for the mode you are editing. Text must reach 4.5:1, and field edges and the accent 3:1. A check that falls short says what to change, and **Fix** makes the change when one is enough; **Fix all** fixes several at once. Passing checks fold away. |

1. **Start from a theme.** Pick Default or Grosso under **Theme**. The built-in themes never change: the first edit starts an unsaved copy, and the header says so.
2. **Adjust it.** Move **Separation** first, then the rest. The app repaints as you drag, and **Contrast** warns you without stopping you.
3. **Save it.** **Save as…** names your copy. Once saved, **Save** writes later changes over it. You can keep 12 themes; signed in, they follow your account to other browsers.

The icons at the foot of the builder are **Import a theme** (paste one or choose a file), **Export this theme as a file**, **Copy the theme as JSON**, **Reset to the saved theme** and **Delete this theme**. A theme file is plain JSON, so you can pass one on.

> **Try Grosso first** If the side panels look flat to you, switch **Theme** to Grosso before you build your own. It sits at 100 on the **Separation** slider, so you can start from it and go further.

## Simulation

| Setting | Choices | What it does |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Non-horn upper response** | **Estimated · BITS frequency limit** (the default) or **Physical model** | How SPL is worked out above the bass for every enclosure that is not a horn. Saved with the workspace. [How the two differ](#upper-response). |
| **Port velocity**, under **Warning thresholds** | 10 to 30 m/s in 1 m/s steps; 17 m/s to start | The dashed line on the **Port Velocity** tile. The dialog’s hint: 15 to 20 m/s is typical, higher for flared ports. [Port Velocity](https://simulator.00aud.io/docs/reference/tiles/port-velocity). |
| **Show Xmax reference lines** | On to start | The driver’s Xmax as a line on the **Excursion** tile. [Excursion](https://simulator.00aud.io/docs/reference/tiles/excursion). |

The two warning settings are kept in this browser, not in the workspace, so they apply to every design you open here. You can also change the port line from the **Port Velocity** tile: click the value in its header.

### Estimated or physical model

**Estimated · BITS frequency limit** treats the driver itself as flat and, when the driver’s data gives an upper frequency limit, rolls it off from there at 24 dB per octave. **Physical model** works the top end out from the driver’s parameters, voice coil inductance included. The box, the ports and your EQ apply either way, and **Impedance**, **Excursion** and **Phase** always use the physical model. Horns always use it too, which is why the setting says non-horn.

_Figure: SPL of the vented example with Non-horn upper response set to Estimated and to Physical model, from 20 to 400 Hz._

Ciare 12.00SW in the 55 L vented example at 1 W, half space, 1 m, up to the 400 Hz that Auto uses without a horn. Both curves come from one run of the solver when this page was built.

| SPL (dB) | Peak | At |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Estimated | 88.1 dB | 392 Hz |
| Physical model | 88.7 dB | 162 Hz |

| Frequency | Estimated | Physical model |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 50 Hz | 86.3 dB | 86.3 dB |
| 100 Hz | 86.9 dB | 87.9 dB |
| 200 Hz | 87.8 dB | 88.5 dB |
| 400 Hz | 88.1 dB | 85.7 dB |

Here the two stay within 1.1 dB of each other up to 100 Hz and part company above it: at 400 Hz the physical model reads 2.5 dB below the estimate. For a subwoofer that is crossed over low the choice hardly matters. For a box that plays higher, compare both before you trust the top octave, and [open this example](https://simulator.00aud.io/app?template=vented) to try it.

**Ask your AI**

The 00 Simulator connector can read, check and save themes on your account, so your assistant can make one to your description.

> Using 00 Simulator, save a theme based on Grosso with stronger section dividers, check its contrast in dark and light mode, and switch me to it once it passes.
